Here I am after being blessed for the new year in the family's prayer room. This happens before we eat food and drink beer for the rest of the day. I was sick this day so just I was mostly in charge of taking pictures and enjoying the experience.
Here is the making of Kaphse (I am not sure on the spelling) which is the special treat during the New Year. We are still eating it and I am still very much enjoying it!
Here are the finalists for a talent show that I went to early on. All the children involved are from orphanages, some of them were from the orphanage that United Planet volunteers often work at. They were so cute and amazing at dancing, singing and giving speeches.
This is at the temple of Shiva that is the other location we went to while on the city tour.
This is one of the more well known Buddhist temples that the locals call "monkey temple" because there are a lot of monkeys that hang around it. This was during the city tour that United Planet sent us on during the first full day in Kathmandu.

I just got caught up on all your posts. I am sorry it has taken me awhile to respond, but I have definetly been thinking about you everyday!!! I read all your updates out loud to mom and both of us really enjoyed hearing all about your adventures. I am so proud of you and love that you are sharing you experiences with us.
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to see your dress!!! That is pretty much the coolest thing that they made it just for you. It will be an awesome memory for you. The food sounds pretty good, I am sure it has been interesting getting use to the times and amounts of food that you are eating. I totally understand being handed a plate without being able to tell them "smaller portion please", and being expected to eat it all. However, I am sure that the food your eating is WAY WAY different LOL!!!! :)
The hike will be crazy, awesome, fun, tiring adventure. AND your are the first!!! Another proud moment!!!
The kids sounds wonderful and you sound like you are becoming such a great teacher... (perhaps something you will need to continue at some point in your life) Keep up the good work and know that you are making such a wonderful impact in these children's lives.
Take care of your self and know that I am thinking of you always. Love you!!!

Great pictures! I can't wait to see more of them when you get home!
ReplyDeleteDid you see an monkeys at the Monkey Temple?
ReplyDeleteIt appears that the whole counter is filled with Kaphse. It that true? Did they fry the whole counters worth in that small fryer?
Have you gone on any other tours with United Planet?

hi. my name is Sheri. I am arriving in kathmandu march 1 to work in the community orphanage. Kumi gave me your blog incase i had some questions. I am afraid we will most likely not be meeting while over there, but i was hoping you had time to answer some questions. I am starting to gather all of my clothes and supplies to leave and the thing i struggle with most is the clothing and what to bring. Do you have suggestions of what is best to wear? I figure i will stand out either way like you have said, but anything would help. Also, what style of shoes do you wear? I know it is a little cooler now than when i will be there, but what do they wear as well? I really enjoy reading your blog and you sound like you are having an amazing time. I am so excited for you, even though i don't know you, to have the opportunity to go to a village and be the first. It sounds like it will be an amazing experience. I hope it is. Thank you so much for reading my comment and if you don't have time to answer the questions that is not a problem
