Well I have a new assignment. Rather than being in Kathmandu, United Planet has decided that my skills (teaching experience and math/science education background) would fit better in a remote village outside of Kathmandu. I don't know the name of the village but I just learned today that I will have no access to electricity. That means a lot fewer posts. However, I am showing my Mom how to post on here so that when she hears from me she can share with everyone about my travels. I am sorry that the blog will not work out as well as I thought it would. However, I hope to still have some communication with my family while in Nepal. I still get to go on weekend excursions every other weekend and I suspect that perhaps some of these trips will be to Kathmandu since I am not staying there anymore and it would be a good tourist destination for me as a volunteer.
The school I am working in has 75 students and 7 teachers. The teachers are all previous students and so don't have great teaching experience and can only pass on the information they themselves had learned in school. All ages are present at the school so the material I am bringing over will be for math and science of many different levels. I think I might also try and pack some games like Dominos that might be fun for the students and help them with math. I have no idea the level of knowledge the students have in the first place so it is difficult to choose material. However, I think some basic biology, physics and chemistry would be great. I can easily work on teaching them some basic statics since I have that fresh in my mind. Anyway, I am trying to collect some books to help me teach and will wing it from there upon my arrival.

Carrie,
ReplyDeleteOnly a couple of days until you leave and I'm excited and nervous and I'm not even going.
Will the new 'no carry-ons' rule affect you or is that just coming in to the US? And, if it does, how big can your purse be? No knitting needles allowed I'm sure. Hope they let you take your camera on because I want to see pictures of the lounge in Abu Dhubi airport that rents by the hour (and everything else you do every minute).
Don't forget your journal since you won't be able to journal in your computer. Good thing you spent time at Tassajara without electricity so you know how to use oil lamps.
Will you go directly to the village without staying in Kathmandu for awhile? Are you taking lots of batteries for your camera since you won't be able to charge it up?
Since you are up in the village maybe one of the people will take you rock hunting for agates or other pretty stones. Don't know if Max gave you rock money at Christmas but if he didn't I'll have your Mom put some in your account. Maybe you will have time to figure out how to mail stuff back to us so you don't have to carry rocks. And if that's not possible small rocks are good if you have time to look.
If there is anything that you need to buy for the school, let us know because I'm sure you can get donations pretty quickly from around here. Just have to get someone there to help pack stuff in.
Hope they give you an address where you can receive snail mail before you leave Kathmandu so you can post it for us.
Have the most fun ever.
love aunt pat
The official plan is for me to be in Kathmandu for less than a month before I get sent to the Village. I have lots of batteries and other fun things. I need to look into the new rules...I knew lines would be longer but I forgot that rules might have changed as well. Now is the time to learn!
ReplyDeleteBummer!! I was really looking forward to reading your posts. Have fun and be safe!
